Ok, I know, you probably don’t like roasted brussel sprouts. But Wait! This recipe has bacon AND brown sugar! Think of this roasted brussel sprouts recipe more like candied bacon with some green chunks in it. Mmmmm candied bacon. I’ll have to make that one next.
This roasted brussel sprouts recipe is really easy to make and you can do it in about 15 minutes. It is a great way to try to feed your kids something green and it doesn’t take too much of your time either. Here’s what you will need:
- 1 bag of brussel sprouts
- Half of an onion sliced
- 4 slices of bacon, cut into small pieces
- Four tbsp extra virgin Olive Oil
- Two tbsp brown sugar
- Red pepper flakes to taste
Start by cutting the brussel sprouts. Cut off the bottom stalk, then half each sprout. Cut one onion in half, skin it and then slice it. Finally, cut the bacon into small pieces.
Mix the olive oil, brown sugar and red pepper flakes in a small bowl.
In a large bowl, pour the olive oil mixture over the brussel sprouts and onion.
Preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Preferably, you would use a cast iron pan. If you don’t have one, go get one they are awesome. If you have to make this before you get to the cast iron pan store, you can use a baking sheet (booo!). Leave your cast iron pan in the oven as it preheats so it gets hot. This will help caramelize the bottom of the Brussel Sprouts.
When the oven is preheated, take out your cast iron pan and place each brussel sprout cut side down until the pan is covered. You should see and hear the brussel sprouts frying on the pan as you put them in. pour the remaining contents of the bowl over them (onion’s and olive oil that settled to the bottom).
Finally, sprinkle the bacon pieces on top before placing the entire pan in the oven. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes or until finished.
