No holiday is complete without something made by Great Grandma. Family traditions and good old fashioned cooking are not easily duplicated. LiveDan330.com is trying to preserve some of what was with the category Great Grandma’s Recipes. This clam chowder recipe is from my wife’s grandmother, who is great grandma to my children. As with all legitimate Great Grandma Recipes, this recipe is hand written on old paper. Something I hope the next generation doesn’t miss out on.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup chopped onions
- 1 cup finely chopped celery
- 2 cups finely chopped potatoes
- 3 cans minced clams
- 3/4 cup butter
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1 quart half and half
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- Pinch of pepper
- 2 tablespoons wine vinegar
Directions:
- Chop the onions, celery, and potatoes and place in a large pot. Pour the clams over the top.
- Add water so the contents are barely covered. Bring to a boil and then let simmer on low until the vegetables are soft.
- In a separate large saucepan, melt the butter and stir in the flour until well blended.
- Add the half and half and stir until it thickens.
- Add the salt, pepper and wine vinegar.
- When the vegetable mixture is ready, pour the contents together in the large pot and continue to heat on low until hot.
This recipe is great with fresh french bread and a little bit of salt and pepper to taste sprinkled on top. I hope you enjoy Great Grandma’s Clam Chowder.
