You don’t have to leave the country to experience island life. One of the more overlooked vacation destinations is the Florida Keys. The end of highway 1 is the jewel of the keys, Key West. While not quite 4.5 square miles in area this destination is full of things to see and do.

Getting to Key West is a easy. If you are a snow bird and want to fly, several airlines provide service to EYW. If you are traveling by car just stay on highway 1 out of south Florida and you will pass all the keys and end up in Key West . There are no wrong turns to be made as this is a long string of islands stretching out over 150 driving miles from Miami. If boating is your preference, there is plenty of room for private boats and Key West is a favorite port of call for many cruise lines as well.

Key West isn’t just about the water.  There are plenty of great restaurants and shopping available too. Don’t miss the Key West aquarium while you are there. If you just want to relax by the pool there are plenty of fine resorts to choose from.

The nice thing about visiting the keys is that you are entering a different world without leaving the country. No customs and no hassles. This year if  you are considering a warm  tropical destination but concerned about the price of a Caribbean vacation, think about visiting the Florida Keys.

There are a few exceptions to this, but to find out what they are you have to go to the Dan330 board dedicated to “Things he won’t do”.
