Patriotic Memorial Day Drinks

For too many of us, Memorial Day is just a day off work or school. Just an excuse to party or picnic. Freedom is not free. The number of American soldiers who have paid with their lives for our freedom is staggering. Most of us don’t even know the basic history of Memorial Day. In honor of them, here is a simplified history of Memorial Day.

Did you know that Memorial Day was originally set aside to honor the men and women who gave their lives in the Civil War? The town of Waterloo, NY is often credited as being the first place to set aside a day to honor those killed in the Civil War. Waterloo picked May 5, 1866 to start honoring their local soldiers by closing businesses and putting flags on the graves of the soldiers killed in the Civil War.

In 1868, Major General John A. Logan declared May 30th as a day to honor Union Soldiers killed in the Civil War. A group of Civil Ware Veterans called the Grand Army of the Republic took charge of the celebration in the northern states.

The Confederate States also set aside a day to honor their fallen soldiers. Alabama and Mississippi celebrate Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday in April. The Carolinas honor their soldiers on May 10th. Virginia celebrates the last day of May. Georgia picked April 26th as their day. Texas celebrates Confederate Heroes Day, January 19th.

After World War I, the American Legion took over the Memorial Day Celebrations.

It wasn’t until 1971, that Memorial Day became an official federal holiday. The last Monday of May is the normal day designated as Memorial Day. Today we honor the fallen soldiers of  not only the Civil War but also the Spanish American War, World War, I World War II, the Korean War, The Vietnam War and Desert Storm.

So this year and every Memorial Day take a moment to thank and honor those who have given so much for our freedom.
