We all know the reality of overcrowded airports, stuffy airplanes and notoriously poor food quality available throughout the entire journey. Still, if you’re an avid traveler, you simply must find a way to adapt to these conditions. Here are 10 tips to help you actually enjoy your next flight.

1. Before buying your ticket

If you’re a US citizen, it’s a good idea to sign up to the TSA program. Eligible travelers can quickly pass through the long security line with a special TSA Pre-Check program that allows you to keep your belt, coat and shoes on. You won’t even need to remove your laptop from its case.

Paying a fee of $85, you’re covered for five years. All it takes is entering your traveler number when making airline reservations and you’re good to go. Remember that not all airlines participate in this program and not everyone is eligible.

2. Equip yourself with journey snacks

Hunger pangs happen during any travel and you can deal with them best with homemade snacks, rather than a sad bag of peanuts on the plane. Pack some fruit, granola bars or even sandwiches. Buying food on the plane, you’ll be only spending your money on questionable meals of poor quality. Buy a bottle of water once you pass the security check and remember to bring something chewy for your children – they might find take off and landing uncomfortable.

3. Bring a pair of warm socks

This is easily the best piece of advice to make your journey pleasant. Plane air conditioning can be pretty drastic, and there’s nothing worse than getting cold feet during a light. Bring a pair of socks to keep you feet warm and cozy. They need to be loose and comfortable, so you don’t end up with band marks on your legs.

4. Benefit from mile-saving programs

If you’re a regular traveler and often journey to the same itineraries, it’s a good idea to stick to one airline and save miles. These miles can be later spent on other flights, but they’ll also build you some privileges. You might benefit from early boarding, get a ticket upgrade or score a place in luxurious waiting lounge, making your travel much more comfortable.

5. Get some practical travel gear

Here are some key items to enhance your comfort during any flight:

  • Shawl or scarf – perfect to take the chill off your journey and a key item to prevent you from getting a cold.
  • Inflatable foot rest – especially important for those whose feet don’t easily touch the floor. Elevate your legs and you’ll feel much more comfortable during your flight.
  • Inflatable neck rest – another smart piece of travel gear. You can use it to cushion the armrest or as a pillow for lumbar support.
  • Eye shades – these will help you to block out everything happening around you, allowing you to sink into your world and truly relax.
  • Sanitizing hand wipes – they’re just perfect for cleaning everything around you, for instance your armrest, seatbelt, screen, tray or any other surface. If you’re a germophobe, this item will make you much more comfortable. Carry extra wipes to use before having a meal or snack.

6. Dress appropriately

Regardless of the length of your flight, you should choose clothes that are comfortable and as close as to pajamas as possible. This is especially important for night flights, where you’d like to doze off as soon as possible. Otherwise, aim for comfortable jeans, loose tops, flat shoes and a hoodie to keep you warm. Avoid tight clothing that presses closely to your skin – you don’t want to end up all swollen, do you?

7. Bring a pair of headphones

These are life-saving during long flights, where engine noise can really get to you. A pair of high quality noise-canceling headphones is a must. During the flight, you can use them for operating your electronic devices, listening to music or simply enjoying the muffled sound of people close to you. If you don’t want to invest in such earphones yet, try using earplugs and you’ll instantly boost the comfort of your travel.

8. Avoid dehydration

How often did you arrive at your destination feeling competently drained? That’s right – that’s the usual effect of dehydration. Make sure to drink plenty of water during your flight. It’s best to stay away from alcohol, tea or coffee. These beverages actually dehydrate you and often prevent you from taking a healthy nap. The air quality in the cabin also affects your skin – make sure to apply cream on your face, hands and lips to moisturize them and protect them against the air and temperature differences.

9. Choose the best seat

Make sure to check online where you’re seated. A window seat is a good idea if you’d like to take a nap – it’s easy to simply rest your head against the wall and doze off. An isle seat will be just perfect if you’re looking forward to walking as much as you like during the flight. If you’re not given a seat you w

anted, try to change it as soon as you can. Sometimes you might find a seat with two empty spots next to you – this means extra space and comfort for you! But don’t instantly get your hopes up – remember that due to delays and cancellations they still might be filled.

One way to really enjoy your travel is to simple stop fretting about lost time or heavy baggage. Instead, adopt a new mindset and allow yourself to actually enjoy all this time you get to yourself while flying. You won’t be disturbed by any calls or emails, so rather than complaining about all that time lost, fill it with fun activities you don’t get to do at home. Eat snacks you like, read a good book, or listen to your favorite music. Be present and enjoy your journey.
