Where To Begin When You’re Renovating An Old Home

You’ve bought a new house, but it’s a project. There’s so much to do that you don’t even know where to begin. You feel nervous, but also incredibly excited. If it all seems a little overwhelming, this is completely natural. Don’t panic. One day, in the not so distant future, this shell is going to be your dream home. If you’re taking on a major renovation project, here are some pointers to help you get started.

Get the experts in

If you’ve got a lot of work to do, the best way to start is to call in the experts. You may need builders, architects, and plumbers. Get some quotes based on your ideas, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask about timeframes and turnaround. Draw up a rough schedule and prioritise the main jobs. You’ll need to ensure that the structure is sound before you do anything else.

Once the basic building work is complete, and you have a stable base, you can start to think about other essential jobs. If you need roofing work done, call some local firms and get some prices. If you’ve noticed damp or water marks, ask for advice about water damage restoration. Once any problems have been addressed, you may wish to ask about preventative measures you can take. If you have an old home, damp proofing treatment may be recommended.

If the wiring in your new home is outdated, it may be best to replace it with a modern system. Replace old-fashioned heaters with central heating, and add extra power points if required.

Have a clear out

Before you start thinking about new kitchens and bathrooms, you need to clear your home. Get rid of any old units or unwanted bath tubs. Rip out damaged shelving units and take up old carpets. Once you have a blank canvas, you can then start thinking about plastering and painting. Hire a skip to prevent extra mess.

Prioritise your design jobs

If you’re hoping to move in as quickly as possible, it may be a good idea to get the essentials sorted, and do the rest as and when you have time. The kitchen and bathrooms will probably be your priorities. Visit some showrooms and have a look through some magazines. Browse interior websites and blogs for inspiration.

Once you’ve sorted your kitchen and bathroom, you can start work on the living room and bedrooms. Try to complete paintwork and papering before you start taking deliveries of sofas and chairs. When everything starts to take shape, you can shop around for accessories and accents to finish off the look.
