You may want to start by thinking about adding a porch to your back or front garden. If you add it to the front, it’s probably going to be quite small. For the back, it can be a lot grander. In fact, there have been cases where the back porch covers a large percentage of the yard. Generally speaking, wooden porches are not too difficult to build. Even, if you are choosing the DIY option. You just need to head down to your local depot store and pick up some supplies. It doesn’t take too long to build a wooden porch or a raised deck. This is the material that we suggest you use. However, make sure that you protect the wood with a waterproof covering. Otherwise, it is sure to rot in seasons of heavy rain.

You do need to prepare the area before you start to build the porch. Mark out the space so that you can visualize it and clear any rocks or vegetation. Then, use some tools to make the ground as flat as possible. Once you have done this, you can start the building work.

Adding a porch or raised deck is a brilliant idea because it gives you a place where you can enjoy the garden. It’s the perfect place to sit and enjoy a summer evening with friends. Or, stare up at the starlit sky long into the evening.

You can dress up this area with modern garden furniture and stylish lighting. Adding lighting to your garden is another way to give your home a little more character. However, you must make sure that you do use LED bulbs. Otherwise, keeping those lights on will end up costing you a fortune.

Before you even think about building a water feature, be aware that these are high maintenance. Particularly, if you take the next step and fill it with fish as well as plant life. Even if you don’t, the water does still needs a filtration system. Otherwise it will become stagnant. Stagnant water is an eyesore, attracts bacteria and can even start to smell. You do need to know what you’re letting yourself in for, digging a pond for example.

That said, adding this type of water feature will certainly give your home character. It is an impressive, unique selling point for a home and often makes the property look more valuable. If you don’t like the idea of a high maintenance feature, there are plenty that require less effort.

One possibility is to dig out a small trench through your garden. You can lay down a permeable material. Once you have done this, you can install a small pipe for the water to flow down into the trench. Add some rocks and it can look quite attractive. It is also quite cheap to set up and maintain.

Remember, if you do set up a pond with fish, you must have a covering over it. Although this may make the pond look unnatural, it’s far better than having your fish eaten by hungry local birds.

If you are interested in making your home stand out from the rest of the stress, exotic plants may be the answer. You can buy plants from different areas of the world that will still grow in your climate. Make sure you do check which plants will and will not thrive. Nothing looks worse in front of a property than dead plant life.

Again, if you don’t like the idea of high maintenance shrubbery, you can buy artificial plants. For instance, you can purchase artificial palm trees for your raised deck that look the part. You won’t be able to tell they are plastic unless you touch the stem. Although, your neighbors might start to wonder why your plants aren’t dying the winter.

If you want to create character with foliage, a tip is to use lots of bright colors and different variations.

Now we move on to the inside of the home, and there’s plenty more you can do here.

Curtains and Drapes

You can think about switching up your curtains and drapes, For instance; you can change the style and length of your curtains or drapes. Longer curtains that drag across the floor make your home look more vintage and traditional. Modern curtains tend to be just the right length. You may also want to play with the height of your curtain rods. If the curtain rods are closer to the ceiling, and the curtain is the right length, the room will look bigger. Try this out for yourself and I think you’ll be surprised by how great the effect is.

It’s Your Style, Own It

Your home will have had a unique style before you even moved in. You just have to bring it to life. As such, if your home is quite old, you may not want to fill it with modern furniture and designer features. Instead, you may want to opt for a vintage feel. You can buy furniture that matches different designs. Remember, if you have wooden accessories, you do not have to buy new ones. Sanding them down and varnishing them can make them look completely different. You could always speak to a decorator to style a complete layout for your home.

Mix And Match

That said, it’s not always the best idea to use the same style in every room of the home. You may want to change up the features and style choices. For instance, you might have laminate flooring in the front room. That does not mean that you should match the bedroom with the same flooring on display there. Mix and match different styles. When you do show people your home, they will be surprised by wonderful differences as they enter each new room.

Professional Paintwork

If you want one of the easiest ways to give your home more character, It has to be repainting the rooms. By repainting the rooms in your home, you can give them an entirely new look. If you’re not much of a handyman you can discover Collegiate Painters online and other similar businesses. They specialize in guaranteeing that the paintwork in your home is pristine. This type of paintwork could be the difference between whether your home is bland or has a unique personality.

Make It Home

If you do sell your house, one piece of advice is constantly repeated. Make it look like a show home. It needs to look pristine, and while this may be true when selling, it won’t give your home character. A home with character does look a little messy, or at the very least, lived in. You need to give it your own personal touches of style. The picture below demonstrates what a model home often looks like.
