The Health Issues Women May Not Expect

There are many health issues out there that you just don’t expect to happen to you. When you hear it mentioned, you think, ‘that would never happen to me.’ However, that’s what most people think, until they realize they’ve got something. Here are some common health issues that women may not expect:

Depression

Depression can be confusing, especially for those who feel they don’t have anything to be depressed about. Depression can be more commonplace in winter, where many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. However, in some, it may stay all year round. Combating depression naturally is possible, with the help of things like meditation, exercise, and suitable SAD lights. However, you may also need to see a specialist for medication.

Breast Cancer

Although the fear of breast cancer is often exaggerated, it is the leading cause of death in women. There are many things that leave you at risk of getting breast cancer, including obesity, alcohol abuse, family history, and certain medication use. Make sure you know how to check over your breasts for lumps, and see a doctor immediately if you notice anything unusual.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted are becoming more and more common, with millions of new diseases being spread each year. Certain STDs can be prevented with the careful use of condoms. However, some diseases can still spread if you are not careful. Make sure you take your sexual health seriously, and get checked out regularly if appropriate. You can’t be too careful, and there won’t always be signs.

Unexpected Pregnancy

Many women believe they’ll never fall pregnant unexpectedly if they are careful. Although being careful and taking precautions is important and can help, it doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get pregnant. If you are sick, for example, your contraceptive method may not work. As women don’t believe it will happen to them, pregnancy can be missed until the later stages. It’s rare that this will happen, but it’s possible. If having a baby isn’t in your plans yet, the abortion pill could be an option if you find out early enough. However, you will need to carefully consider your options and what’s best for you, your life and your body.

Heart Disease

Heart disease is responsible for about 29% of deaths in women. It is the leading killer of both men and women. However, women are often misdiagnosed when it comes to heart disease. So much so, that by the time the illness is discovered, it can be too late to do anything about it. Women may experience symptoms like shortness of breath, jaw/shoulder ache, and difficulty getting around.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is common in women, but it can actually be prevented early on. Humans continue forming bones until age 30, after which maintenance is the main focus of the body. If you take the steps to keep your bones healthy and strong early on, you’ll be healthier and avoid this disease later. Things that contribute to this include a sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, anorexia, and a diet low in calcium and vitamin D.
