Great River Road 6: St. Paul to Lake Pepin

This entry is part 2 of 15 in the series Riding the Great River Road with Harley Grandma

Hastings is the next real river town on our journey down the Mississippi. They say that the turn in the Mississippi at Hastings is the sharpest one that barges have to navigate along the whole river. Hastings has a nice riverfront park and a very active downtown with lots of antique shops and places to eat.

Leaving Hasting we head north and east to get to Prescott, Wi. where the St. Croix river flows into the Mississippi. There’s another kind of activity that increases dramatically south of the twin cities and that is motorcycles cruising the river road. Where there are bikers you will find biker bars

As we mentioned earlier, Prescott is where the St Croix River flows into the Mississippi. The Mississippi River gets two pretty good shots in the arm in this area as both the Minnesota river and the St. Croix join the Mississippi here. The Mississippi is now a little mightier than we saw back in Bemidji.

Diamond Bluff is the next river town on highway 35 on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi. There is no downtown in Diamond Bluff and most people just drive right by. If you are adventurous you can literally cross over to the other side of the tracks and visit the Nauti Hawg. This place is a lot of fun and worth the stop.
