Growing up we used to look forward to this time of year because the wild blueberries were ripening. When there was a bumper crop we made blueberry everything, muffins, pancakes and of course blueberry pie. It is the pies that use up the blueberries fastest and if you are buying them it can get very expensive. For a few weeks of the summer it seemed I had a permanent purple stain around my mouth and on my fingers from picking blueberries.
Wild blueberries are very sweet but also tend to be much smaller than what you see in the produce department. While visiting Bayfield, WI a few years ago my wife and I happened upon some amazing blueberry farms. These were the biggest blueberry bushes I had ever seen. The berries were really sweet just like the wild berries we pick in the woods. You can grow your own sweet blueberries? Yes!
Watch this video for some great tips on planting and growing your own blueberries. It is a lot easier than you think and they are right there in your garden not out in the woods with the bugs and creepy crawlies.
