Moving into a new home is a thrilling and exciting experience. If this move is the first time that you have had a place of your own, then you are going to want to make it individual. Within your home, you need to express your unique sense of style. Creating an environment that suits you will mean that you settle into your new home fast. Before you move take some time to think about how you would like your new home to look. It could be that you want a certain theme to run throughout your home. Or you may just want to go with the flow and see what happens when you begin to decorate. Remember, your home is a blank canvas when you move in, and it is your job to make it a work of art.
If you are decorating your home on a budget then, you may need to get hands on with the design of your home. DIY decorating is a fantastic way to make a house feel like home straight away. Here are some stunning projects that you might want to try at home.
Tie Dye Cushions
Soft furnishings in your home are an expense you don’t need. Many high street stores charge over the odds for things like bed sheets, cushion covers and blankets. An easy way to make an old piece of material look new is to use a tie dye technique to create a whole new look. This project is simple and will make your interior look fresh and funky. You can try this project using any material, but I like to use cushion covers as the style suits cushions well. For this project, you will need some material (I am using cushion covers) and some fabric dye. You can pick up fabric dye from a local textiles shop or online. You will also need some string.
First make sure that you can take the covers off the cushions. You will not be able to do this project is the covers are not removable and so this is essential. Once you have removed the cushion covers give them a wash. If the covers have dirt on them, they will not dye well and will end up looking messy. Next, make sure the material is completely dry and clean. Tie the material with the string. It is important that you tie the material up in a firm way. Make sure that you go round the material with the string as many times as you can. Put the tied up ball into the mixed fabric dye and leave to soak for around twenty to thirty minutes. Different dyes take different amounts of time so check your pack for details.
Finally, rinse the material with cold water and hang it up to dry. When the material has dried, you will have a beautiful tie dye cushion cover. You can then slip the covers back onto the cushion for a bohemian style piece.
A Unique Bookcase
An easy way to save money on furniture is to make it. You may think that it sounds hard, but it can be quite easy to create furniture from inexpensive materials. All you need to do is use your imagination, and you can make a whole host of new, exciting pieces. Here is just one example. You can make a stunning bookcase for your new home using old crates.
When doing this project it is vital that you have space. Have the professionals come few days after you have moved into your home. You can leave your furniture in storage whilst you take the time to complete DIY projects. Just ask the moving company to hold fire, so that you can have some time to work on your house before it gets too cluttered.
For this project, you will need some white paint, which you can get at most DIY stores, some old crates and a glue gun. You can get old crates from warehouses that have a lot of stock. Just visit a department store or warehouse and ask them whether they have any old crates that they don’t use anymore. They will likely give you a few from their warehouse, and you don’t even need to pay for them.
Begin this project by painting the crates using the white paint. This part of the job could get quite messy. It may be worth putting down newspaper so that you don’t mess up the floors of your new home. Once the crates are painted it’s time to get gluing. Glue the crates together on their side. Lay the first crate on its side, so that it stands alone, then use a glue gun to stick the two crates together. You will need to use three or four crates for this project. Leave the structure to dry outside overnight. In the morning, you will have a beautiful new bookcase.
DIY Colorful Vases
Every new home needs a beautiful bouquet of flowers to freshen the place up. If you don’t have a vase, then don’t worry. You can make a unique vase at a fraction of store costs. If you have any old jam jars lying about they are perfect for this project. If you don’t, you can ask at a local restaurant or cafe as they will use many jars within their kitchens. For the project, you will also need some glass paint which is cheap if you buy it online in bulk.
First of all, wash the jar and make sure that it doesn’t have any labels on it. Labels can be tricky to get off, but I have found that soaking the jar in boiling water for ten minutes before you wash the jar helps. When the jar is clean, it is time to have some fun. Paint the jam jar using the glass paint. You might want to try and make a pretty pattern or just paint the jar in a block color. Leave the painted jar to dry for around four hours. Once the paint is dry, you will have an original vase in which to put a fresh bouquet of flowers.
