I live on the property that I grew up on. My maternal grandparents bought the land nearly a century ago. To this day there are remnants of my grandparents plantings. From old pictures you can tell that the area was more prairie than anything. My grandfather planted a lot of trees including fruit trees.
One type of tree on the property that has been under appreciated by our family has been the crab apple. I am not sure how many crab apple trees were here originally but there are two left. The remaining trees look kind of tired and vulnerable to a big storm, but they still produce tons of fruit. In all the years I have been no one ever did anything with the crab apples.
My own grandchildren love to ride on an electric golf cart we have and the other day we stopped by a crab apple tree. They wanted to try the crab apples. I had to chuckle as they bit into the small but sour apples. They gave me the look like “why did you let us eat that?”. All I could tell them was, you wanted to try it. I knew they were sour.
The crab apples trees are certainly beautiful in the spring with the blossoms. But there must be more to this I thought so I started looking around on Pinterest to see what other people do with crab apples. Here are some of the things I found.
