25 Lessons from 25 Years of Marriage, part 4
SERIES NOTE: Since one of the most read posts I’ve published was about how Theresa and I stayed married for 25 years so far, here’s a series of 25 lessons I’ve learned in that 25 years! I’ll be posting twice weekly – Mondays and Wednesdays – with this series. And Fridays will be something fun/different.
7. Kids are great (and SECOND in importance!)
We have seven children. Yes. Seven. Four by birth and three by adoption. Several are now adults on their own (success!). A few are still at home. But you can imagine when we had all of them at home and young enough to be ‘needy.’ Everything was urgent. It was often loud and constantly ‘busy.’ But we love them all and each and wouldn’t change a thing. However.
There was an ‘us’ before there were any of ‘them.’ And ‘they’ will all eventually be gone, leaving the original ‘us.’ And when that happens, I want the ‘us’ to be healthy and excited to travel and do great things… or garden and nap a lot… (you get the picture)
I want us to not only ‘love’ each other, but LIKE each other and remember each other.
It’s so easy to get lost in ‘providing for your kids.’ Not just the food and shelter, that’s the simple part for most. But the majority of parents want to give their kids more than they had – in opportunities, safety, memories, vacations, education, etc. And when we pursue that as good parents loving our kids, it’s too easy to ‘lose’ our spouse and our connections with them.
